PAT ~ Portable Applicance Testing
PAT Testing (or more properly called Portable Appliance Testing) is an important part of health & safety policy and regular testing of portable electrical appliances in the workplace is a legal requirement for employers.
Health & Safety states that of all reportable electrical accidents, 25% involve hand-held and portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to make sure that no danger results from the use portable equipment. This means in effect, that a systematic and planned periodical program of maintenance, inspection and testing is carried out. The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) places this obligation on employers where:
- Appliances are used by employees.
- The public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.
- Appliances are supplied or hired.
- Appliances are repaired or serviced.
The level of inspection and testing required depends upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.
